C.P.U. advise please

Can you help or redirect me any place?

this is my computer here, as you have listed on your web page.... I
have looked long and hard every where for information to upgrade my
computer. Can you help or redirect me any place?
I have already upgraded to win 98se, 128 ram, a 40 gig hard drive, and
a new dvd writer rewriter... and all is going great.
What I really would like is a new cpu or mother board faster than
it's current PII-266......... then a new video card as the one that
comes with this computer has only 6 ram on it. (ati rage pro)
The sound on these computers is phenominal (bose speakers with
crystal sound cards) The design is also pretty awsome, so being as
I am particularly attatched to it inspite of it's age, am willing to pay
for the upgrades to keep me and it happy.

I think you should build a new computer for your main use. But you could upgrade this one as a novelty, and it wouldnt cost much.

If you choose to upgrade it for novelty sake, you need the most ram you can get, so 384mb, look for second hand ram, it wont cost you much and it will improve performance.

That Pentium 2 could probly be upgraded as well. You should look into a p2 - 450, or even a early slot 1 pentium 3, make sure you check your motherboards compatibility.

If you want you can install a ATA 100/133 PCI card so you can make the most of that 40gb HDD which is probly ATA 100/133.

I think thats the only upgrades i think you can do without replacing the motherboard. Good Luck!

LoveHate, kick that IBM to the street.

You may have made the mistake my sister did with
her Aptiva, She waited too long before upgrading
and it no longer made any sense to spend good
money on only modest upgrades.

You have a number of bottlenecks. The last BIOS
upgrade for your model was 1999 and even then
the BIOS may not reliably support much of the new
or even relatively new parts available. IBM offers
ZERO info for what this upgrade will do for your
system or what upgrades it will support.

Long story short, I went through this with my sisiter
who spent $3000 on a top of the line Aptiva, waited
more than 3 yrs before upgrading, and never updated
the BIOS. Virtually none of the upgrades would
work without spending more money on bypassing
the motherboard with add-on cards.

Who knows if a non IBM board will fit in the case or
how your power supply would hold up with many new,
power demanding pieces.


If you keep your Aptiva::

IBM offers that 1999 BIOS update, and a few other
driver files. I would upgrade the BIOS, drivers, add the
max RAM (another 256 in your case).

Try to get an old PII (450 mhz etc)chip and see if it will
work. It should. Maybe find a legacy(older)video card
and you will be rolling in tall clover.

Whew i haven't heard about Aptivas for a long time. But I'd tend to lean towards the upgrade side. Not very hard to build a new PC and you can get a decent one really cheap now days so long as you dont want a high end gamer.
