My freind has encountered a problem with his Dell 8500 where his CD drive no is no longer working. It has power going to it and the connections seem to be ok but the device manager can't find it. Why is this? Does anybody know the solution.

P.S. I hate Dells

Has he messed with some internals? It may be just dead.... A little more info will help.

P.S. You sig says you have a 128GB 9800.

damn im going to have to keep my sig that way for a while now....
Anyways my freind didnt really do anything to the computer he hasn't ever really used it much matter of fact all he has on it is a word document and thats it. i looked at his device manager and it had nothing under cdroms and it's just not present. if you insert a cd the icon usually comes up in my computer but he doesnt have that icon. it's weird, i think it just doesnt work anymore

Does it recognize other CD drives?

If it isnt the cable, jumpers and another drive works, it's messed.

Can you even see the drive in my computer?

No. Remember, it's not even in the device manager.

Try switching the power connector. If that doesn't do it, make sure that the IDE cable is properly connected to both the drive and the motherboard.

Try his cd-rom on another computer like you said. Or swap it out for another on his computer and go from there....
