i'm more of a nForce chipset, but i know VIA can hold it's own as well.

so assuming that i switch out mobos, how does my set up look? will it be able to handel HL2 and other games in the future? How long might it last me?

yoru computer should be fine for a while.....mine's still fine and it's lower than yours by a bit vvvv

Your system is good. It can be about 50% better if you OC it all. If you are going to OC it, then get the Abit or DFI mobo.
