Hello,

I am new here and i must say the site looks very good. I'd like some advice on gaming component upgrades. My current system is very old and is made up of (amongst others) the following:

Jetway 663AS Pro Mobo
AMD Athlon 1Ghz
GeForce 2 MX 440 Graphics card.
384MB PC133 RAM
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! Value PCI
30GB HDD (prolly 5200 rpm)
Win 98/ME/XPPRO (I have all, but am at the moment running 98SE)
17" Belinea Monitor

As you can imagine I am having great difficulty running modern games, recently i have not been able to play hardly any due to something being really screwed up (i keep getting General protection faults and crashes and errors and god-knows-what) I think my system is very unstable. Sooooo with Xmas coming up i thought i'd have a "fresh" start by replacing my core gaming components which i narrowed down to:

CPU
Memory
Mobo
G-Card
Sound

I hope that is all i have to upgrade anyway. Basically what i am looking for is a mean-ish system that'll last me another couple of years (hopefully), i would like to be able to play Half-Life 2 when its comes out. I'd like for you people to help me with is what to buy and why. My ideas are:

CPU (un-biased towards either AMD or Intel, around the 2Ghz - 2.5Ghz mark?)
Memory (I was thinkin 512MB fast DDR)
Mobo (again no-idea, please help out here)
G-Card (Probably looking GeForce FX range or Radeon, again please help out here)
Sound (Nothing fancy, maybe just a normal SB not a "Live!" one)

Finally i want to keep this as cheap as possible maybe:

CPU £120
Memory £60
Mobo £50?
G-Card £100
Sound £25

Just randomly Looking in a PCPRO magazine advert i come up with:

CPU : Intel P4 2.4Ghz : £114.00 / 133.95
Memory : DDR PC2700 512MB : £48.00 / 56.40
Mobo : ASUS P4S8X-X/LAN 533FSB H/T DDR LAN : £40.50 / 47.59
G-Card : MSI nVidia GeForce FX5600 128MB DVI / TV out : £105.00 / 123.38
Sound : Creative SB 5.1 Digital : £21.70 / 25.00

Total = £329.20 ex VAT / £386.32 inc VAT

Are these components going to give me what i want? Should i go for different brands? Any brands / models to specifically avoid? Anywhere i can get it cheaper? I know its a lot of questions but this is the first time i've upgraded anything ... ever!

Any help would be appreciated. One last thing, I have installed memory and Cards before but never a mobo, is it very difficult? Any websites that can help me?

Thank you very much :) i'm sure u were all noobs at one point ;)

I would opt to go with a bigger HDD, maybe a 40 or 60GB 7200 rpm. If you are looking at cheap(like me :) ) go with amd, what you can do, is look at the sigs of other ppl to get a feel of what ppl are buying, and ask them if they would reccomend it. I recently built a new system, and so i don't know what is better and the like, but microbell and the senior members here could easily reccomend products/brands.

Thanks soloman,

Does your system play games fine? I'll check out ppls sigs for sure thanks.

Keep the advice comin folks :)
