Spring is comming and in my part of the country, that means horrible thunderstorms. I have an APC 650VA/390Watt USP. I was wondering if it would be safe to put my faith in it to protect my system from lightning strike (i've lost a computer to lightning before), or should I continue to unplug everything during storms?

UPS wont protect against a bad lightning storm

Unplug your gear in a bad storm. Or use a laptop with wireless and a cheap wireless router.

UNPLUG-UNPLUG

Even though most UPS advertise PROTECTION, they are
best suited to give you the time to save and properly shut
down when you lose power.

I would ask what your power company's policy is on power
failure and ligtning strikes and find out what they recommend
for REAL protection from both events should they occur.

My power company has a small reimburement policy if you
can prove that despite following their recommendations to
protect your electronic equipment power failures and surges
destroyed your toys. May not apply to lightning but any help
is better than NONE AT ALL...........

A decent UPS will protect you against the following:

Brown Outs
Black Outs
Surges
Spikes

Unless your PC is hit directly [ which is doubtful ], your UPS will keep your PC safe and give you enough time to shut down safely.

i was lucky, we had a huge thunderstorm (largest i've ever seen around here) a few days back, i woke up at 1am to the thunder but didn't even think about unplugging my comp. luckily nothing happened

Unplug, beedubaya.

As a matter of fact I always unplug my gear from the wall when I've turned it off, out of habit, regardless of the weather  ...
