Hard Drive Space Allocation

When fixing my computer over the phone with my tech support company, the guy advised me to allocate 30 Gb of my HD just to my operating system and other like files and programs... so that when i had to reformat, all of my files would be on the other 50 GB and wouldnt be touched.. but now that ive allocated that space, i dont know how to access the rest of the HD... any ideas?

if it is a partition then during a full format the partitions will be erased.

yes... i partioned during the reformat... like during the OS reinstall
