well what OS is it? i spose you could find the language options on an english machine and try and follow the same icons find the same place on the Japanese machine and change it to English.
For XP Control Panel > Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options > Regional and Language Options > Languages Tab > Details button. Then choose from the drop down box or go Add.
Try that on an English machine and then follow the same icons tabs and buttons.
I donno maybe that might not work if things are arranged differently.

I work at a japanese firm but no one here is computer literate. i'm trying to find out how to do it so a japanese coworker can translate the characters for me in english.

there's a software called MUI(Multilingual User Interface)
it can change your windows' language to any other language you want .
