HD Problems...

It looks like all IDE Channels are on auto already.

I don't think there is anythign wrong with my BIOs because I have tried two other HDs and both have worked...

Well, I think you should try cable-select. You have to put 2 devices on the cable, both cable-select. Also check for any broken pins on the HD.

Not being funny, but are you sure the IDE cable is inserted the right way round?
Red stripe must be next to the power connector on HDD & blue connector on IDE cable (if there is one) must be connected to the mobo not the drive.

Can I put two hard drives on cable select?

I'll have a good look at the probelm hard drive for any probs.

Yes, you have to. Put 2 HD's or 1 HD and a CD-rom on a cable and set both to CS.

The coneectors on the cable could have any color. I don't know if it matters, but the longest end should connect to the motherboard.

Yes, did that, same error. i can't see any problems with the pins....

It's from an old bunch of PCs from a school I'm doing up.

Most of the hard drives are 4.8 gig )) and I'm installing Win 98 on them...

Is there any way to determine if it is truely stuffed? It would be nice to have another 40 gig hard drive

No. Well, you could try it in another comp, but I highly doubt it will work.
