hey my dads harddrive just blew up and when we took it out to look at it their was a little very tiny chip that had like a singe mark on it, is their anyway or anywhere we can take it to get information off?

uhm you can take it to a place like drive savers that specialize in getting data out of dead hard drives, its not cheap though. Look for data retrieval services.

yeah like a chip had blown, it appears as if it is the hot wire for the power connector that is a positive 5 volts next to the ground connector. i think it might be possible to solder it to back togather.

pic of it

Just find another of the same hard drive.

Take the entire PCB off the hard drives, and take the new PCB and put it on the old hard drive.

If this is possible without the platters showing, its 99% safe and will work. If you EVER see the platter, it's 50% chance it's gone.

Looking at your pic, that appears to be a diode that blew. If you heard a "pop" noise, that is a diode for sure. I hate to say it, but that is not easily repairable, and may not be the only problem on the board.

Instead of repairing the board, you might try to replace it with a known good board (same exact make / model of drive)

The board itself comes off easily on most drives.

This is a better alternative to paying a data recovery service.

A quick search on ebay showed lots of circuit boards for drives,...

What kind of drive is it?
