though i have been advised by a friend to simply go to a store, tell them what i've got, and ask them what i would be best off to buy. There is of course always the chance of getting screwed over.

Nah it was someone else. I also know a guy running Half Life 2 with the RADEON 9600XT Atlantis 256MB and it was fine. Even if i can't run a game like that i'll be happy.
I haven't even had a chance to have a real play of UT 2004 or Unreal 2 poor me

Well the 9600XT is certainly not a bad card, and you should have a good time with it. Just remember, in case anyone else looking to upgrade ever asks you...
The 9800 Pros are about the same price and are better cards in every area except the RAM, which makes virtually no difference.
