Im thinking of getting an AMD athlon 64 3500, and as ive been reading the forums i onlyy seem to see overclocked P4's from 3.2 to 3.8 or something like that, but i never seem to see AMD's OC'd, i know that AMD's run a little hot, but does this mean i cant overclock??? a few tips on OCing and why nobody seems to OC please.

You're looking in the wrong places :) , people OC AMD's just as much especially in these forums.

I have a 35w 2400+ XP-M OC'd from 1.8GHz to 2.5GHz currently, it'll run 2.7GHz but it requires more Vcore than I care to put in it.

The 3500+ 64's winchester chips (they have the .9u technology) can OC better than the 3500+ 64 newcastles.

Best place to start is read the 'Basics on overclocking' sticky at the top.

Also the 3400+ 64 socket 754 mobiles are supposed to be some good OC'ers also.

Both the mobile and the 3500+ I've listed off I've seen get to 2.7GHz on air through reviews I've read and user posts.

Yep, AMD proccesors are quite capable of overclocking, and I've found that a lot of the newer 90nm cores run much cooler than some of the P4's like Prescotts on stock cooling.

Also keep in mind that AMDs have lower clock speeds, so a 400-600mhz clock speed increase on an AMD is pretty damn good, and overclocking the 3500+ which runs at 2.2Ghz up to 2.6-2.8Ghz would give high speed 3.8Ghz Pentium 4s a good run for their money.

I have a 3500 Newcastle, i havent finished my rig yet, i only need a few things. If your still around in the near future, you can hear my results.

AMD's are dabom when it comes to ocing. i presently have my 3200 (2ghz) running 2.5ghz at stock vcore. i love it :) my only prob is that i don't have a clue how to set my cpu fan speed so sometimes it goes down to like 2.2k rpms so the temps get up to 50 but thats about the max i get. once more AMD's own at ocing in my oppinion.

Sh0r_t, just get a Vantec Tornado, 80mm CPU fan with over 80-CFM. That would really drop your temps.

yeah thanks people and yeah im probably gonna get new fans too, so the vantec tornado's good?
is there different good fans for rear/front/side fans?

The Vantec Tornado is for your cpu. For Intake and exhaust i suggest these high -out-put fans.

The first fan is 120mm 126-CFM and the other is also 120mm with 108-CFM. I just got mine in the mail the other day. I ordered 2 of the first fan and 1 of the second. Those fans are ideal for air cooling. I also got a fan controler for my 3 high out-put fans. If your really serious about air cooling one of the fan controlers would work great. I have dual floppy bays, so im going to order 3 more 120mm fans and get a second controler for one of my floppy bays. So i will have 6 120mm fans. 3 intake, 3 exhaust, while i have higher CFM 120mm fans for exhaust.

Oh yeah here are the fan controlers.

I'm glad you suggested that second 120mm fan. its the same one i have blowing air directly onto my motherboard. it is a great fan. it is a bit loud thought. im used to loud computers so i can take it. i learned that it is an industrial fan so you will get a lot more life out of it then a normal 120mm fan. i got my sunon 120mmx38mm at newegg for $12 shipped. it brought my temps down alot too. as im sitting here typing this im at 28c on the cpu and 25c case. and it never gets above 38c cpu under load.

xteam02001, yeah those are some damn good fans. Myself, i dont care about noise, just what comes with it, better temps. How many degrees did your system drop while using that fan?
