is it possible to use a fat application on top of a ntfc boot
(winxp).
in other words winxp loads to the xp sceen then the fat app loads.
my listed partitions listed is 1: smart fat
2: ntfc
if possible will the fat app crash in time?

except if your OS doesn't support NTFS

I think the 8MB FAT partition at the start of the drive is used to hold files used to read NTFS, normally the system on its own cannot read NTFS and it cannot boot directly to NTFS if it doesn't know how

No, I use NTFS for my Windows partition and I am sure I don't have it.
I know you have it when the first partition of your harddisk is logical instead of primary, but there are some other causes too.

I've never seen an NTFS system without that 8MB partition. it should show up if you're reinstalling XP and selecting your partition, and possibly in Fdisk (since it can read FAT) but your system will generally not show it
