Xp Pro advice...

Hey guys, I just received a free dell computer from 1 of my parents...I had Win 98 on it and installed Xp on a small (like a 10 gig drive) cauz the 98 one didnt work....anyways It is kinda slow not too bad just wouldnt mind if it were faster...what would be some cheap fixes? I am keeping XP Pro cauz IMO best op system ever...but yhea....I am needing advice if you guys could help that''d be awesome! Thanks again

Did you upgrade as in install your XP over your 98 installation? You will get much better results if you clean install. Also, if your PC is old enough to still have a 10GB hard drive, are you sure it can fully handle XP?

Find out what CPU it takes, and how fast can you max it out and go over to "compgeeks" www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=CPU
They have really cheap CPU, most of them are used and refurb, but they are still good. Im picking up a Pentium 2 350mhz for like $4.50.....
Also get some ram.

RAM is important with XP. How much memory is in there. you should have at least 256 in there for it to run smooth

I ran xp pro on a 450mhz p3 with 64mb of ram, but yeah get more ram.


getting anouther stick of 128 would be very cheap now, as 256 is £25. Is that sd ram though cause it might be hard to get hold of, as i havent seen sd ram in a while.
