dvdplayer wont read DVDs

I have an HP 400c dvd player on my computer and when i put a dvd in it wont notice i have the dvd in there until i retart my computer. Does anyone kno why it does this and if i can fix it so i don't have to restart my computer jsut so it can notice i have a dvd in there?

do you have a dvd player installed on ur computer? such as maybe cyberlink powerdvd or something?

or is ur problem something different???

Is this a newe drive that you just added?

I had a dvdrw drive that was new and could not read a cdrom. If its not a new drive, than make sure you have software to play dvds.

no it's worked before... i have interactual player and dvdn shrink but i dunno if that would effect anything (i kinda doubt it). Also when i go to my computer and look at the drive it used to say the name of the movie and now nothing shows up and there is nothing in the folder.
