.cache files

Hello,

I've got a problem with windows XP home edition that has got me pulling the last of my hair out!

It seems everytime I try to download any kind of .exe file, SOMEHOW something attaches the .cache extension to it. As an example, the Netscape setup file would read NSSetup.exe.cache or flash.exe.cache

Now in the past, I could just rename the file and drop the .cache extension, that would be fine and they would run. But now to my amazement, windows reads it with the extension, recognizes the extension, but you will not see the .cache extension to remove it, (unless you hold the mouse pointer over the file name)
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

And even if I could drop the extension, .exe files never run anymore by themselves, I'm always prompted to pick a program to run the file with and because I'm ignorant of which one to use, I can't choose one.

Is there anyone that can help or has experienced this? A million thanks in advance for your help.
