All icons gone

During this use of my computer i experianced first major LAG, then problems with windows, i was forced to manually reboot, however when i came to windows xp, i found this:
(forthe use of this topic, this image MUST be larger for the veiwing)

I have no clue whats happened, i ran both anti virus AND spyware detection.

do you have an ATI rage II 3d video card?

try resetting hardware acceleration. I haven't been on windows for eons, so someone help him with this one.

Restart the computer in safe mode >right click>mycomuter>properties>hardware tab>device manager>click on the + sign beside display adaptors>right click on the vga driver and unistall and restart the comp.

its all good, i ended up just reformatting, it needed it anyway.
