backing up things

is it possible to backup windows settings only so i can do a format and reinstall, also i will be going from xp pro to hopefully xp media center edition 2k5, c: has all my data and will b left alone, and d: will b windows, also is xpmce2k5 a noticably bigger installation than xp pro(d partition isnt very big)

i was looking at windows built in back up thingy and it looks like it sucks, so is there a back up tool someone would recommend
