How do I turn off "use automatic settings" in the device manager section to allow me to select different resources?

I was alble to change these setting in win 98.

I just can't remember, I am boggled. I am under administrator I made sure of that, I can't change anything not even conflicting devices.

i am familiar with dvice manager but please include a screenshot or better description.

Yeah, their are tons of prefixed settings. What do these settings affect..?

When you pull up a device under system devices root in the device manager.

as an example only: control panel/system/hardware tab/device manager/system devices/ Motherboard resources double click one of them, and goto resources tab.

Is that clear cut enough or shall I go into farther.

I shouldn't have to have a conflict to change these settings.
