Microsoft didn't lock nothing. So you are telling me the version of XP that he has no longer works on any machine? I don't think so. There are so many keys out there that will work. Microsoft ain't go nothing to do with this situation. The original key works 3 times, after that you need to call, or find another key that hasn't been used 3 times yet. Where did you come up with that info from?

Oh, probably from the 20 computers or so, that I fixed that had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

if his copy isn't bootlegged, all he has to do is follow my instructions, install XP, Call MS to get a new installation ID number and he won't have this problem.

Microsoft checks to see if you have a valid copy of XP. some versions like that one corperate version of xp that floating around the internet automatically get locked. some people has versions they can't tell so they try to make them reactivate it.

they only do this to computers in the US

actually the figure is more like 6 times

Well my COmputer is doing a low level format as we speak, its at 70 percent and has been going for 15 hours so far. So I figure it willl be done in another 5-6 hours.

I have also took out one of the memory sticks and just left in my new 512 stick.

I took out the slave drive as well and just left the one in im formating right now??

Any other suggestions before trying to install windows again tonite??

How will they give me a new activation key if that disc is only meant for one computer and thats it.

They want you to buy a new disc dont they for each new machine you buy or assemble?

you can use on one computer if you are not using it on another computer supposely. read between the lines

first thing to do. Download the reg file from the EXE File Association Fix for Windows XP section. This should bring back the runniong of exe files. if that doesn't work than read on...

you said you know you dont have a virus because you've formated over and over. You aren't perhaps backing up files before the format and restoring them (and, with that probably restoring the infected files), are you? Another thing is to NOT install Nortons, but run a trial at first before installing Nortons. Anti virus software can cause these problems, too. Install it later, but for now dont install it just for testing purposes, as well as any other intrusive (but constructive) program.

Anyhow, mostly make sure to NOT restore backed up files right away and see how it runs. Like stated above, maybe your also restoring a infected file.

Actually, if your able to open a browser goto tendmicro housecall and run the free online virus scanner and have it fix it. It's better than many other virus prot programs and is upto date since it is online. It doesn't take the place of Nortons (because it is just a scan/fix and wont PREVENT anything in the future) but will find most anything.

Microsoft takes a "snapshot" of your computer config, 3 or more changes ie: HD size, ram size, CPU id. It will make you re activate through phone and they ask why are you re activating. That snapshot is linked to the CD key. And also CD key gens dont work. Microsoft has a list of genuine cd keys.

you have a new RAM disk.....
take it out and use the old one and see if that helps

also, if you can make a boot disk, put it in, and at the command prompt, type fdisk

then delete the partition completely before installing Windows

CD keygens do work and I know that for a fact. Do you see my name on here? I have a warez site and I've dont that a bunch of times and it does work and I've helped other people with the same problem. My girlfriend has XP Pro, when she went to Windows Update, she couldn't download the updates because her serial number was wrong. So I downloaded RockXP, changed her serial number, and It went threw. The only difference with Home is the activation. After 3 times it's done with that serial number. All you need is a new one that hasn't been used no more than 3 tmes. Trust me, it works. You need to try it yourself.

You are not allowed to talk about that on this site.

that said XP pro need actiated too, unless you have a corperate edition. thousand's of people were using a specific version of xp pro corp. (the key code. was H2HYJ 28PQM................you know the rest) the have been circulating around since xp has been out. that code get an automatic lock. there was a guy around here who is making me rich (joking). anyway he had a computer business. he install that copy on lots of computers. you use to get updates with it. then windows stopped the update, telling you that you have an unlicense key. now they just lock it.

you can't reformat or fdisk it. you can't install a legit OS on it. When I figured out you can use third party software to delete it, I got most of his early customers. I would have them buy a legit version after I deleted the hard drive (he charged them full price each for his bootlegg version). now a lot of people have figured it out, so I don't get locked computers with that version much now. that computer guy is in jail now on an unrelated fraud case

but I do get the locked computers that had got caught with the activation crack (very few though). they use to work, but microsoft has got hip to them. that is why when you reinstall windows now, you have to copy the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak to the system 32 folder to bypass activation, when you use to have to just copy the wpa.dbl file back.

I tell custumer to buy the xp cd now. it only cost $99.00 now as opposed to 300-400 that it use to cost.
