A friend of mine has a laptop running on Windows 98 with a Pentium II. He installed McAffee Adware/Spyware removal and it deleted the infected files. After that, he rebooted in to Windows and all he heard was the starting music. After sometime nothing appeared, not even the taskbar. He couldn't do anything except there was just the blue background screen. Does anyone know hot to fix this?

Common windows error you have 2 options

~Foramat the hard drive
or
~Get a windows disk an do a boot from cd sequence in other words reinstall windows


How to format through dos

when in dos or c prompt type in "format c:" this will bring you through the format process

If I upgrade, will it correct the situation?

Have you tried booting in safe mode?

No, but I think in Win98 you need run the configuration utility to boot into safe mode and he can't do that unless something actually shows up on the screen except the music and the blue background.

If I recall correctly, you can run safe mode in win98 through both msconfig, and by pressing F8 at startup.
