Nec versa 2650cd

I just bought a used NEC Versa 2650CD and it's not booting up. If I plug it into the AC the power LCD lights up, and if I plug the battery in the battery LCD comes on. Pushing the power button does nothing. I even tried the reset button on the bottom of the laptop - it makes the power LCD blink, but nothing else. I tried holding the power button (with and without being plugged in) - nothing.

I'm not a computer genius by any means, but could the CMOS battery be a problem? Mine is a watch battery under a small panel. Just an idea.
