Question about antivirus software

I am using clamav for my win 2000 server and ran a scan to check for any viruses. I noticed that it detected one which I thought if it found one it would remove it as well but it appears it didn't. I also ran a scan from pcpitstop which also detected a virus. I looked at the tools, preferences option and there was a section called infected files with the options report only, remove (use carefully) or move to quarantine folder....I selected remove and ran a scan again figuring it would remove the virus but it didn't. I verified that it didn't by running another scan at pcpitstop.

Why didn't clamav remove it and is there free software out there which will? Thanks in advance.

free software that i use:

avast for viruses
spybot s&d for spyware/adware
adaware se for spyware/adware
zonealarm for firewall

no problems so far.

avast isn't compatible with 2000 server. thanks though
