Right now i have a pentium 2 400 mhz gateway g6 -400 with a 10 gig hd. I would like to build my own pc. Somthing a little faster, or a lot. I would like up wards or 2mhz i dont need any thing cool loooking in terms of a case just basic. I would like to go with pentium. I dont really play games only the occasional online one. I want around 512mb or ram with 2 slots so when i got the money i could up grade to 1 gig. How much could i buy a mother board, case, and a processor for? Also i would probbaly need a video card, and a sound card i assume or could i use what i currently have? After i got all that assembled i would upgrade to a bigger hd and etc. Thanks.

i dont really have a budget, pretty much the cheapest i can do it with out making a pos. I needs to be dece. That processor seems good. so 125 for mobo and 190 for processor takes me up to 315. I dont plan to overclock. I guess i can use my old hd until i get enough money. And i could use one stick of 512 until i get more money. So i wont need a HD. but i will need a video and sound card. do you have any suggestions for a mobo or just what ever would work with that? thanks.

You can always get a motherboard with built in video and sound, and then add on those cards later when your budget will permit it.

Also, you can get a decent size hard drive (80GB) for pretty cheap, so I'd say you might as well add one if you've got an extra $60-70 to spend.

Ive learned so much the past few days just starting to get into building computers. My brain is swirlling with ideas. I want a new pc I have the money, but I would really like to buy a fourwheeler this spring. I have been working quite a bit to get money for my a truck which I purchased at auction and got a hell of a deal. It needs a few things like brakes and a bearing in the rear end. I plan on buying a fourwheeler this spring or late spring and I keep purchasing things that are setting me back from this goal. I think I will try to live with this pos until then. I was telling my mom about how cheap you can build a decent computer for yourself and it sparked her interest. She now will probbaly have me build her one. I made a notepad document of what I think i would take. I wrote al the prices from newegg.com and have the links. Money being kinda tight now i showed her what a pentium 4 pc would cost. Then I did some looking at celerons and figured If i was gonna go with a celeron it would be a celeron d. I have no idea what that means but they seemed better than the regualr celerons. She will mostly be doing stuff with photos, like scrapbooking and just taking them from our digi cam and putting them on out computer which is now a Pentium 1 MMX 200mhz with 64 megs of ram. I dont know how she does anything on that computer it takes so long just to open one picture. I never really liked the celron before but I figured the only thing that computer will be used for is surfing the net and doing stuff with photos. I only have to pick the case out now and find a 400w power supply. I am basically clueless on how to build a computer which probbaly annoys the hell out of a lot of people on this forum, but forums keep me sane always finding new things to spend mine or other peoples money on. I would assume I will need more cables and some other small items to put a pc together but I have no idea what they are. Any suggestions or comments on the items I have picked out would be greatly appreciated. I know very little as I have said about building computers, so if you see any compatibility issues or something i have picked is just a POS I would greatly appreciate your input.
