Alright dude, here's my best shot for $1000:
CPU- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ ...$150
Motherboard- ASUS K8V SE Deluxe ...$116
RAM- Corsair XMS 1 GB PC3200 ...$198
Hard Drive- Western Digital 80 GB ...$60
Video Card- eVGA nVidia GeForce 6800GT ...$395
Case- RAIDMAX w/ 420 watt power supply ...$48.50
Optical Drive- SONY DVD/CD-RW Combo 52x32x52x16...$39.99
Floppy Drive- SONY Floppy Drive ...$7
For a grand total of $1048. I realize it is a bit over the $1000 limit, however I think it would be worth it to save up the extra 50 bucks. There a couple things I need to explain. The CPU is socket 754, and yes, I realize this isn't upgradeable, however this CPU will be good for a long time, and also it is considerably cheaper than a socket 939 CPU. Otherwise, this computer is a beast, and that video card will keep you very happy

^^^^^ i would cut back on the 6800gt and get a 6600gt instead. the 6800gt isn't worth nearly twice the price for a little better performance. that should save you around $175. you should then get a good PSU from a trusted brand to give power you those nice parts. usually PSU that come with cases aren't that good.
and i also recommend a little more HD space. i mean if you are spending $1000, at least get 120gb. if you make those changes, everything will fall under $1000

the raidmax PSU in pizzathehut's post will be quite sufficient to power that machine. my 420 raidmax psu powers my machine in my sig, and that's with my proc oc'd to 3.51ghz and the card running at ultra speeds with unlocked pipes.

Then you can cut back on the video card and get just the 6600gt you'll have a total of about $200+ savings. You could use that to buy a nice heatsink, and a 74gb WD Raptor HD. That would increase your performance greatly trust me. Besides that motherboard is beast!
