How close are we to deep dive / full immersion VR?

Will it happen within our lifetime ( in 20-50 years)?

By using Elon Musk's Neuralink (Neural Lace 2039???) ,NerveGear, nanobots, mind uploading maybe?

And if we were to achieve this would anyone still want to live in the real world apart from people who are maintaining the system and certain religious groups?(or at least take breaks from full dive VR)

Or is this just hype and fantasy?

VR will get extremely good in your life time, assuming you are under the age of 60 and live to be 80+.

It probably won't get to the point that you can't distinguish it from reality, though. To do so visually and auditorily will happen fairly quickly, it is fairly easy to imagine photorealistic visuals within 20 years, and in fact, we'll likely be most of the way there within 10 years. But the other senses are much harder, such as haptics, inertia, momentum. E.g, how do you provide a convincing sensation that you are running with inertia and momentum behind you, when in fact you are (at best) simply running on the spot on a treadmill. It will be even harder to give a convincing simulation of such if you are just jacked into some kind of computer brain interface while lieing in your bed. Doing so would require something that can perfectly fool and emulate all of your bodily senses, something like that is probably over a hundred years away from being perfected, cheap and non intrusive (i.e. doesn't require a brain implant). But we are already working towards it now, and making baby steps.

I believe that VR will get significantly better in our lifetime, ie exponentially improving the tech we already have, reducing the motion sickness, etc. We'll probably find some better forms of input as well. However, I don't believe any of those things will be within our lifetime, except maybe using our brains for simple inputs like moving around.

I think the idea of people not wanting to leave that world for the real world is slightly exaggerated in a large portion of media... I reckon it will be similar to gaming now, ie the people who split from the outside world and spend most of their time gaming (due to the many reasons this occurs) will do the exact same in VR. For everyone else, the real world will still offer something more visceral than VR ever could.

Hope this explaination is PG13 enough for this forum, but it's like porn. It's great, and when you first experience it, you think it's the best thing in the world. But you always know that it could never be as good as the real thing.

Edit: This question has been double posted, i've moved my response here from the other one
