New monitor in the pipeline, some opinions wanted

Inside your mind...
Okay so here soon I am going to get money for a brand new monitor.

I will have a $500 budget and am looking into getting a good one.

While I very much like the one I have (A LG 24GM77-B 144Hz TN panel monitor) its time for a (slight) upgrade.

The main motivation is my father needs a new monitor and since I have been giving him my old hardware anyhow the monitor is next.

So since my father doesnt really have the funds for a new monitor its going to a good cause.

Plus it gives me a excuse to give myself a new piece of equipment i know I can afford.

I have picked out several models but am looking for second opinions.

All of these are on Amazon as I get free shipping via prime and newegg has started to add in tax into purchases made in my state (Pennsylvania) so to heck with that.

I know there are other sellers like B&H photo but most pricing is around the same no matter where i go, even my closest Micro center (a good 30 miles away) doesnt have anything I am interested in.

So here are my options:

This Dell gaming monitor:

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-S2417DG-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B01IOO4SGK

This AOC:

https://www.amazon.com/AOC-AG241QG-2560x1440-Adjustable-DisplayPort/dp/B01N7QDNJ8

This Acer:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XG270HU-omidpx-FREESYNC-Widescreen/dp/B00VRCLHYS

This Viotec

https://www.amazon.com/VIOTEK-GN27D-Curved-Computer-Monitor/dp/B078P57ZWL

And another acer (this time a acer predator):

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XB241YU-bmiprz-23-8-inch-2560x1440/dp/B01LJUNMYK

Basically I am going to aim for 1440P at a 144Hz refresh rate.

Bonuses like freesync and gsync is a darn steal at this price range

The TN panels dont bother me, IPS panels for most of these specs are way out of my range

4K is a long way off, I rather sacrifice resolution for refresh rate as my current monitor runs at 144Hz.

As long as it will fit nice with my GTX1060 with 6GB of vram it should be fine, it may tax my system a bit but I wont mind as the monitor will be a bit more future ready.

Its going to take a long time to see 4k at 144Hz without expensive hardware, another 5 or years and if i go with this monitor it will be good for that time :D

Even if I get a better GPU down the road this looks like a good path to take.

IPS is definitely in your range.

Slightly out of budget but qled and HDR.

Asus TN 1MS.

Take note a 1060 will struggle with 1440p. To get higher refresh rates you'll need to lower settings.

Also, 4k 144hz is attainable now except for the GPU price gouging. 4k 144hz HDR panels are supposed to be coming this year after being delayed from the 2017 holiday release. Not real sure why they were delayed but it's whatever. Next series of GPUs will do it quite easily.

That lg looks good, a bit big but doable.

I do have some space concerns but i can do it.

The other two i think i will pass on, i know my gpu will be taxed but again i may upgrade in a few years from now depending on prices and what comes out

What about this pixio?

I mean i will have to deal with taxes but it is cheaper there than on amazon

I don't buy offbrand monitors so can't recommend them. I really only linked the ultrawide because it's an IPS with the requirements. I personally have the 4K version of the Asus monitor so not sure why you'd pass on it. The Samsung is probably the best out of the bunch.

I'm only mentioning the GPU struggling with the res because you want 144hz and I personally had 2 980s trying to run 1440p 144hz and it didn't do a very good job of it. I also have a streamer friend running a 1060 6GB with 3 144hz 1440p monitors and playing on one he has to turn down settings. His target is only 60fps though. One of my older Titan X cards almost struggles to do VR which requires a 90fps target. Just some food for thought. I mean you can always still run at 1080p.

Personally, I'd probably just get a real cheap 1440p monitor to tide you over and wait for 4k. I know most people talk away 4k but mostly only because they haven't tried it or figure they can never afford to run it. Either that or they think it's not necessary because of screen size blah blah. After playing on 4k for almost 3 years straight now it's almost impossible for me to game on anything but 4k and these days it's not that hard to run. The 1080 was more powerful than the 980ti, so one could assume the 1180/2080 will be more powerful than a 1080ti. A pair of 1080tis can run most AAA titles over 100fps easily. If you don't plan to upgrade your card for a year or two by the time you do those GPUs will easily run 4k and it'll make buying an expensive 1440p panel now kind of pointless. You can get 60fps 4K panels now for 400 or less. Later they will be even cheaper and 144hz 4k monitors should be below the $500 threshold. Just something to think about.

Well the asus does look like its okay, its a TN panel but again that doesnt bother me.
As for other monitors well i have to think on what will be best, I know 4K is coming down but its beyond my budget.
When I say I have a $500 budget I usually mean at that break off point so anything higher is outside of what i am comfortable buying.
I mean yes i would wait a year but the monitor issue with my father cannot wait.
I plan on sticking with my GTX1060 for a long time, sure its a bit under powered for 1440p at max settings but i am willing to turn settings down.
Thanks to the miners the 1070 and 1080 are way outside my budget and its doubtful that the new cards both Nvidia and AMD will come out with this year will be any cheaper.
I think i will be fine at 2K anyhow, just trying to get the best bang for my buck without killing my finances.
If that means buying a off brand i will consider it,the market isnt that friendly to those of us on a budget and really even if there will be a cheap 4K GPU for under $800 in the future that is still a way off.
I was just thinking of upping from 1080p as if I am getting a new monitor myself i want it to be a upgrade.

In my situation what would you do?
Just get another 1080p monitor?

I think i can do better than that, even if I get another GPU in the future it will still be a mid range card as i cannot afford high end.

I mean I do have this option too:

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Optix-27-Inch-Monitor-MAG27CQ/dp/B079NGSWRL

Its right in my budget, IPS and 1440p and at 144Hz

The monitor i know i will keep for a long time, I will be fine if i had to lower my settings.
But staying 1080p would seem meaningless for any potential upgrade i will do in the future.

I mean I understand i should not pay too much for 1440p but as you mentioned it may not be wise to go to a off brand, it is kind of a damned if i do damned if i dont scenario.

Well I already mentioned what I'd do, but only because I don't see the appeal to 144hz+ panels unless using Freesync or Gsync. That being, get a cheap 1440p panel or just buy your dad a simple replacement monitor. I've had the 144hz and 165hz ROG Swifts and personally I'm fine with 60hz 4k as long as the response time is 1ms. I don't ever use vsync, so I still get a ton of frames.

I will say this, test the settings first before committing to "I'm ok with turning things down". There's simply no point in a high refresh panel if your GPU can't sufficiently push past 60 fps. Go into GFE and run all your games at 1440p with DSR to see where you're at performance wise and if you're ok with it. I get your sentiments and thought process, but mining will start dying after the IRS commits their taxation of it (coming end of this month) and the next GPUs from Nvidia will be midrange. Try to remember that the 1060 is technically the low end of the midrange GPU, so a 2080 or 1180 (whatever the next one will be) will actually be the midrange "$500" GPU. In the end it's your money and your decision, and if I were to buy something right now that's not over $500 it would be the Asus simply because I've had the best luck with their monitors in terms of backlight bleed and QA. Then again, at the same time I'd probably be a little more patient and grab that Samsung monitor simply because it's IMO the best 1440p 144hz monitor on the market.

Take note* I'm not a fan of Gsync or Freesync either.

Yeah the samsung is just a tad out of my range, that $500 cap is there for a reason.
I mean could i afford it? technically yes.
But I have to ensure that i can afford it, the numbers are right but only after i get everything else under check.
After all i still need food on my plate, my rent is fine as are my cell phone bill+netflix+hulu+britbox but my food bill is my biggest one usually.
Its not like i dont have the money, but a few dollars out of place does effect how I do things.
and $49 more than my budget is perhaps more than i can handle even if i gave it another month.
Granted i can give this another two months then it is possible but I was trying to see what i can get now as opposed to two months down the line.
I mean waiting another month is doable and i am not impatient but my money is very close right now to being ready for a good monitor under $500.
If you say i should wait another month then consider it done, i was just trying to see if i can get something below my limit first.

But on the other hand i am really considering that LG widescreen, it looks utterly fantastic.
Same thing with that MSI monitor, they share a few features like curved screens and that MSI seems loaded with built in features

Well that's kinda why I worded it the way I did. I personally feel that Samsung is the best 1440p monitor money can buy right now with the ROG Swift 165Hz under it (which isn't HDR). My coworker got that Samsung for 300 bucks too, so it may go back on sale.

So one thing to note, I made a boo boo and that LG I linked is actually a 2560x1080 monitor. It's an ultrawide as opposed to the MSI which is standard but it's 1440p. I feel that MSI is lacking for the price. Sure it's 144hz and 1ms but they only specify adaptive sync soooo I'm going to guess adaptive sync specified by the HDMI standard, which using HDMI limits you to 120hz. It's also a VA panel so hit and miss on backlight bleed.

Where as this using an SVA panel is HDR with the same specs and designates Freesync.

Idk man, on buying off brand up to you. Out of your budget so just speaking monitor convo here, but I find it funny how this brand can offer an SVA panel with the same specs as the LGs and expensive Acer monitors but barely over $500? I mean the Asus ROG one is over a damn grand.

Goes to show you pay for the name in monitors.

Well adaptive sync doesn't bother me, going for a freesync monitor may be better but i still have a nvidia card so it would not work now.
And I may not go for gsync.
As for the MSI being a VA panel from what i have read it seems to be very good.
Out of all of them I think I will go for the MSI, may not be the most ideal choice but it checks off most of the boxes I want

This review here seems to give it a lot of good marks:

https://www.eteknix.com/msi-optix-mag27cq-gaming-monitor-review/

Of coruse you have this too:

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/msi/optix-g27c-curved-gaming-monitor

But i bet the reviewer is a monitor snob.

For the money i have i am just trying to get what i think is right for me, I can go cheaper but then you get into 60hz monitors and or off brands.

If i have to stick to TN thats fine, i know money dictates panel quality and IPS is still quite pricey.

Rtings is the go to place for panel reviews, so they would be as snobby when dealing with facts as I am with hardware.

VA panels are known for exactly what the guy conned it for though and I'd be willing to bet most of the docking comes from the viewing angle which they advertise as 178. Also take note the panel he's reviewing specifically is the 1080p version. And looking more at the review I can see why it was rated so low.
