so i have had this printer for at least 6 years. it always worked, until ..... the dreaded no use for about a year and a half. right now, it still processes paper thru correctly, but no print ink is applied to the pages. before i go buy $50-60.00 worth of ink for it, is there much chance that it will still print? or have all the ink passageways dried into a solid mass, and short of boiling the printer in solvent for a week, never to flow a drop again?

It's probably all gunked up on the sensors / ink cartridge holder. You'll probably end up (like you said) buying $60+ if using the self-clean option...and possibly some elbow grease in trying to clean the sensors with alcohol / q-tips.

If you only sparingly use the printer...a better investment would be to get a laser printer - they don't gunk up like inkjets. Ink jets are really only beneficial if you print often...but even then, the ink carts are expensive for the amount of pages you get compared to a laserjet printer.
