I'm starting to operate under the suspicion that this might have all been caused by the space heater in my office... it's in the basement, which gets pretty chilly during the winter. I think these crashes coincided with when I started using it.
As of now, I haven't had a crash since I've stopped its use... we'll see if this lasts.
