So the DVD drive I have, seems to be getting stuck on its metal encasement. It will work properly if a disk is in the tray, but if you remove the disk and close the tray, it will seem to get stuck on its encasement when you try to open it. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
Ive been experimenting with trying to add washers to raise the top of the encasement, but then disks fly off of the tray and start grinding on the spinner".

It's probably off balance or something, or there's buildup of dirt/dust, or possibly just wearing down.

IMO would be more worth it to just replace it ($15-20) vs trying to fix it.

Only thing I could suggest to check is the front panel of the DVD drive, normally its clipped on to the metal chassis, maybe a couple of the clips is off so just check them. If its the disk tray that is damaged/warped then buy a new one a suggested already.

I would recommend if you replace it, to open up the damaged one so you can learn how its put together/ works that way you can troubleshoot any future issues and teach others.
