new processor/motherboard installed.... old processor shown, also crashes

So, blew out my MB and processor a few weeks ago and bought an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ to replace my old 1500+ as well as a gigabyte 7nf-rz motherboard.

I installed them all and after some glitches everything is ... sort of okay ... anyway, the computer still registers my processor as the 1500+, i installed AMDcpuinfo tool and it reads the 1500 and so does a motherboard monitor program I installed.

I'm positive they sent me a different chip, it looked just like it should have and I mean it's a completely different color than the 1500+ (which i still have sitting around) so I have no idea how this is possible as I replaced the motherboard too.

Any ideas? The computer keeps freezing intermittently or when playing games and I'm not sure what to do about that either... I think maybe it's overheating but the temperature is always between 40 and 50c even when playing games. Ugh. Bad computer.

I've run every monitoring program I can find, it SAYS the old CPU is in there!! THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

i really hate computers now. wow. do i accuse the online store (www.shopampm.com) of cheating me and painting the old 1500+ a different color?

i wish i could stop it from randomly freezing completely. that's all i ask. games are unplayable while it freezes every 10-30 minutes.

i've set them to optimum default and set them to fail-safe. it doesn't help.
 
yes. Gigabyte 7nf-rz, Athlon XP 2200+

the MB supports the 1500+ and the 2200+ and beyond that. they're all socket A.

the processor is running fine, but all monitoring programs tell me it's the old processor, you can't say the motherboard could have the info stored because it NEVER ran the 1500+. programs are specifically telling me that is the processor i have when it's just not. i'm so confused.
 
This is your problem right here man:

Front Side Bus Frequency 99.5 MHz

Your CPU frequency isn't set where it should be since you put in a new processor. You need to go into your BIOS and change it from 100 to 133 and that'll register it as the 2200+ XP

EDIT: To elaborate this whole section is what you need to look at:

Clock Speed 1342.8 MHz
Clock multiplier x13.5
Front Side Bus Frequency 99.5 MHz
Notice the clock speed is only 1.3GHz.... the 2200+ XP is 1.8 GHz and you're getting 1.3 because you're multiplier is 13.5 and the Front side bus frequency is 100 so 13.5x100=1.3GHz, whereas you need it at 133 for 133x13.5=1.8GHz
 
I checked and as I knew (trust me i've been in the BIOS almost constantly lately :( ) it's set to 133mhz fsb speed. All cpu monitoring programs still tell me it's at 100mhz and the processor is a 1500+ running at 1353.1 mhz.

this all seems so impossible. and i've never experienced anything like it. i must be missing something really simple. my BIOS doesn't have a setting to let me change the bus speed either as far as i can see, not even in ctrl+f1 advanced settings.

Oh yeah I forgot about gigabyte boards. Check your motherboard manual. I know for a FACT there's a jumper on the board that's defaulting it to 100MHz. Find that jumper in the manual and find out where to put the jumper to make it at 133MHz This should fix your problem ;)

no idea why it refused to boot up all the other times i'd flipped that switch. still didn't think it was auto-setting me to 100mhz though since bios let me pretend to change it.

I don't know what kind of switch you are talking about. Yeah technically you could up your multiplier to 18, but there's a chance the CPU could have a locked multiplier which cancels out that option...besides changed it to 18 and having your FSB to 100 is killing the performance you COULD have from the chip.
