Hi
I have got an ATX motherboard, and i intend to change my case to a Xaser V, i found out that it comes with no power supplies, so i hunted around for a power supply and came up with this from microdirect

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=7767&GroupID=9, it is supposed to be recommended by coolermaster

Hiper 350W silent 18dB +SATA connectors AMD approved K7/K8 3yr warranty HPU-3S350

what do you guys think of this?

microdirect recommend this one
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Productinfo.aspx?ProductID=6531

FSP 350W Super Quiet PSU FSP350-60PN(PF)

how much wattage would i need

is 350 watts enough

is it true that the higher the speed microprocessor i use the more the wattage requirement

also with micro ATX one woudl require lower wattages

If you're looking at spending money on a psu, you should go for Antec hands down, although there are a lot of other good companies like thermaltake, coolermaster, vantec...

What are your system specs, that would help us decide how much power you need. I agree Demalii, antec makes great psu. Look into them. They are very quiet and reliable. The newer ones have new technology that slows the fans down when the temps are low and speeds them up when the temps are high, this is for the line labled fan.

I have currently the Fortron Source FSP-350W running in my machine, even @ 350W for my power hungry machine, i never felt like problem for it.

and as well, when i was building my machine this wasnt available in UK, i have to specailly order it from USA (zipzoomfly.com)

its fan speed depends on load you are putting on. as the first time I switched on with minumal components installed (just CPU and 1 RAM) as I was burning the thermal material, it was so damn quiet that I had to closely look in the PSU to see the fan running.

as after I installed everything. it still runs very quiet, just the sound of my Intel's boxed fan (its Loud), still not enough that I cant hear my system running @ 12FT distance.

and BTW, my system running on this PSU is listed in my signature. as this PSU can peak upto 430W's without failure.

at the moment i havegot a gigabyte 81875 ultra mobo
with the 160 gig hard drive seagat
512 megs ofram
gigabyte avidia 5700 (128 MB cache)
cd rom

i plan to get audigy 2zs, a DVD writer in the next 2 months

whenever i played a graphics innsive game, the machine would start to beep. so i decided to go for a new cae

i like the xaser V, i read that it is better at cooling than the xaserIII or anything else. since it does not come with a PSU, i looked around. i am not sure how much power i need. what do you guys think?

hey blind arrow, if the PSU is rated 350 watts how can it handle 43 watts(is it the specifiation), you seem to have a beast of a machine, what is your case?

i was wondering what you used 4x512 MB memory for?

every PSU has peak output which is sometime lower than its written output and sometimes more than its written.

as it purely depends on the manufacturer. as I have seen the 500W PSU's giving maximum yield of 450W or even 430W.

but this Fortran, though at 350W written, was tested and it has given maximum yield of 430W without failure. other good PSU have achieved 30-50W mor than whatever was written.

I am not a modder, or lightning fan, so i had as well spend a good time choosing a case for me, its though simple, but worth the price to pay:

i'm using ChenBro (also bought from Micro Direct )

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=4804&GroupID=8

i'm using this one, at that time it was for 39£. and reasons for choosing this case was Longer (more space b/w mobo and hard drives) and 120MM fan at back (supplied with casing, but too fast, so i changed it) + 92mm at front (not supplied). its basically a toolless casing, even no tool required to plug-in the AGP/PCI cards.

or alternatively you can gof for ChenBro Xpider Gaming Bomb (its a little stylish) but internally its 100% exact.

and these 4 X 512's as Im not a gamer, but graphic/web designer, and when animating a movie/clip made in 3D studio max. it squeeze the juice out of the memory.

if u r going for 875 chipset, then this PSU ill be perfectly fine, or you can as wll get the Cool Blue = 500W from same Fortron Source , this is new one, but in blue color, as well available from microdirect.

if you are going to install prescott CPU, then it will be good to get higher power, though FPS 350W will survive, but at higher loads, its fan rotates faster making noice. which it returns to silence as when loads get down.

over all its very very nice PSU, i'm very very satisfied.

also, have you considered buying ANtec Sonata? it comes with 380W silent PSU and the casing is designed for silence, you can as well find it with microdirect.

Antec Sonata Piano Black is the name

yes, i have come across the antec sonata. it comes with one fan instead of the 4-5 offered by the xasers? is one fan good enough? for games and hard core simulations (once i get myself to do some work on my machine, instead of playing around)
the sonata has a 380 watt truepower PSU.

what is this truepower PSU anyways?

the following link describes the xaser as a n antec clone
http://www.procooling.com/reviews/html/antec_sonata_case_review.php

the antec sonata is cheaper by about 50 pounds than the xser+PSU
is that hardcano unit for fan control any use

also the xaser looks bigger than the sonata, more room for expansion

is your case the same size as the sonata?

ok the antec fan is 120 mm, i guess that allows for air in and out then an 80 mm, and with the option of a 2nd 120 mm fan, i could have 2x120 mm fans compared to 5x80mm. and if i am not doing much in terms of major stuff, then it is ok.

it is just that my present case, a dabs job for about 30 quid put me off so much that i decided to invest i na really high spec case.

hey what fan should i look for if i were to go for the antec sonata

just came across these fans
unbranded 550 and 600 watt fans

ooo, antec 380 watt psu are for 50 quid on microdirect, did not realise those things are that epensive, tips the scales in favour of the antec sonata, if i a mgonna go branded i might as well go for antec sonata which throws in the psu, right?

though the PSU from antec sonstaa has 2 fans, any advantage to a PSU having two fans?

True Power is special PSU range from Antec, silent yet powerful. this PSU only comes in Sonata, cannot be purchased seperately.m unless until someone is willing to sell his off sonata.

the fan in sonata comes with a special fn conenector that is favoured by the Sonata's PSU, this fan adjusts speed according to ambient temperature (ambient rtemperature is that of inside the casing during system operation)

for exact casing sizes and their manuals, tests, i'll direct you to their websites:

http://www.antec.com/us/pro_enclosures.html (this is Antec all series), you can as well consider Performance Plus series, as well coming with True Power PSU's

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=15138 (this is Sonata's page, you'll get mechanical drawings, etc)

and here is ChenBro's

http://www.chenbro.com.tw/product/product_preview.php?pid=80

after full one month of spending time choosing the right case for my requirements, I had finalised 2 caes, that were this ChenBro and other being Antec Sonata (sonata wasnt available at that time) also sonata has drilled holes on sides, which wasnt my requirement (ChenBro hasnt any)

basic requirement was a 120MM fan at back, as 120MM fan is quieter and has more air through put of air. and both Sonata and ChenBro casings have this quality.

another plus point of ChenBro case was that it didnt came with any PSU, means that I can chose mine. and I was speciafically looking for a PSU with a 120MM fan beneath. so now it makes 2 120M fans above and at side of My CPU. both quiet running at 1000RPM. and my temperature of CPU remains at 38-42 in normal working conditions.

no special arrangement of any cooling device and absolutely noiseless.

rest is your choice, as I havent physically touched sonata (my friend is using it in canada and he is as happy as I am) as i finalised ChenBro, and when I opened the box, it brought wide smiles on my face rather than :(.

* u can as wll find the individual tests on both sonata and checnbro from their websites. the gaming bomb, and that case I am using are same internally, so you can as well change the face anytime that will cost you extra 11.50 (from Microdirect) and you'll have 2 different casings rather than 1
