As for what's better in the newer versions... you'd have to look at the changelogs for the newer versions . I assume bug fixes and better compatibility and more plugins available.

Things broke last time we upgraded and were forced to downgrade back to the version we're running now.

Plus this is the version that all of Social Knowledge's forums use so that changes can be made across the board for all without having to stop and customize each and every one.
