Hm. That seems plausible. Unfortunately I'm guessing that would mean that the damage to the motherboards is irreversible... Is there any way to test that theory?

Borrow a PSU from a friend to test not on the carpet, or go buy one from a local part store to test and then return (or keep if it works).
