Try booting off of a Linux LiveCD such as Ubuntu to see if you can see any data.

oooh please would you do me the favour and tell me what to do next, i saw your post and was curious to find out how to get the data back. i did see that linux can read NTFS files while running, but can that help get your lost data back? in my case i was formating and talking on the phone at the same time and i picked the wrong partition on which to instal win7 and erased my data. is ther any way to get them back?? i would be more than grateful for your help

you'll need to use some kind of recovery software to scan the partition and recover them.

aham, recovery tools i always thought those were useless. i will give it a try i will google for the best possible recovery software to see what can be done. thank you

A couple of questions: Have you tried to plug it into a different USB port? Also, What was happening when you discovered the problem? Did you by any chance unplug it while the computer was running?

A suggestion to try.
1. Shut down your computer,
2. Unplug the HDD.
3. Restart the computer
4. Find any driver/firmware updates and download them and install them.
5. shut down computer
6. plug HDD back in and reboot.
7. See if windows finds the updates and installs them.
8. If so, your problem may be solved.

If that works, download Recuva software. I've had very good luck recovering files using it.
