Dear all, I'm after some assistance if possible.

I bought a Dell XPS 1330 Laptop some years ago now and am running windows Vista on it at present. The laptop has worked fine all these years but recently after a period of some months away I returned, switched on my laptop and it automatically shut itself down.

On further investigation, just as you get to the home screen a cmd prompt window appears labelled 'Shutdown.exe'. This then disappears very quickly and the laptop shuts down. I know I should probably be looking at a new laptop after all these years but this one has a lot of my work on and at present I cant get it off.

I have tried booting in safe mode which works but nothing I've tried via there resolves the problem once I try to boot normally.

Any ideas???

Many thanks

Dave

Hi many thanks for the response.
I've checked the start up folder and it appears empty however the cmd prompt still appears as soon as I turn my laptop on!

check all of your startup programs then, type in "msconfig" in either a command window or a Run box. Look at everything that's under the "Startup" tab.
