BRUCEG,

See if hard drive is displayed in your BIOS settings. If its not showing, try removing the CD/DVD-Rom data cable and connect it to your HDD and try to install XP. Otherwise, i believe it is a dead drive , and you need an replacement.

ok, if i do that then how the heck am i going to use my windows xp disc to install it????????

He means RAID.
Acronym for redundant array of independent disks or redundant array of inexpensive disks. RAID is a performance enhancing method of storing the same data in different places on multiple hard disks.

I have the same hard drive as you and I got a CD with it.Check the box that the hard drive came in for the CD.If there is no CD then consults the User's Manual that comes with the Hard Drive.Western Digital caused some problems for me but I managed to fix them by consulting the User's Manual.

when installing during the initial check (didn't check the specs, sorry and would have to back track) if it's a sata drive then you need to press F-5 (I think) to install the drivers.
