After a long period of crappy desktop setups, AMD mobile APUs, and last but not least my current i5-3210m w/ gt 645m msi laptop. It has dawned on me that nothing quenches my thirst for gaming quite like a custom desktop setup. Anyways the point here is that it occurred to me my EA550 Platinum Antec PSU might not be enough to power an over clocked power hungry FX 8320 paired with my Gigahertz dual fan 7870 msi card.

The maximum rated TDP for the card is about 175watts give or take. While the FX 8320 when heavily overclocked can peak into the low 300 Watt territory. Given their power hungry nature, would my PSU crap out on me or what?

The efficiency and overhead value on that PSU probably puts it into a range of about 720-750w it can handle. Only for short periods of time though. If you push it too hard for too long it'll crap out on you.

For the performance to wattage, would have been better off getting an i5 3330.

Also, power consumption for a 7870 over 1GHz is more over 200w.
