DVD writer doesn't recognize inserted disk

I'm running XP and just replaced my DVD player with an HP DVD Writer. It's hard to believe this device came with no program to write DVD's! Everytime I try to use it I receive an error message to insert a disk when I've already inserted a new blank disk. Why is this happening?

Anyone know of an easy program to record DVD's? The program I finally bought is so complicated it might as well be in Greek. I don't know what speed it should use, I need a wizard like in Nero Burning Rom.

for making dvd copies i use dvdxcopy.
For other dvd making purposes i use roxio platinum.

I have both programs but the drive won't recognize a disk is inserted.

Make sure you are using the correct media. If it still will not acknowlege the media, call HP. How long have you had it?

It's new at most 3 weeks old. I've tried using the 2 disks supplied with the writer.
