Upgrade compatibility, GPU

I am upgrading the graphics card from an old computer, the current card in it is an Nvidia card that has 1/4 gig of memory. after doing some research i have found that the mother board is said to be compatible with the Nvidia 9 series. But the card i have is ddr2 and the one i found is ddr3 but is of the Nvidia 9 series, as is my current one. It also has the same plug in. Does the channel matter on GPUs? My mother board has the serial number D946GZIS.

You can put any video card you want in the board as long as you have a PSU large enough to handle it.
