with partition magic, can you combine two partitions with data on them into one with out loosing the data?

Yes, you can merge partitions together.

I would try Silent Fear's solution or copy your files to another computer (network/internet)

i just wanted to mention that once im rich enough, I'll be backing up my data to tape. I think they last the longest. I currently back up to cd and dvd but have problems with some of my discs going bad.
