Hey everyone I'm building a new pc for going into my second year of software development in college. I'm not looking to spend to much money. What I have already is to pricey for me so I was wondering if you guys could help me reduce cost with minimal performance loss. I'm not a gamer so I don't need a great gfx card but something decent, I do want a good CPU though. I havn't really dealt wit hardware in awhile.

Cost is 971 dolllars right now, id like to spend around 700 if even possible.

Thanks!

you'd only need more than 4GB RAM if you were running alot of 64bit applications on a 64bit OS,
32bit applications can only access max 4GB of RAM whether their on a 64bit OS or a 32 bit one. so having more than 4GB only makes sense if your running 64bit programs ( most programs at the moment are 32bit unless you specifically download a 64bit version.) :)

8gb is pretty much the standard nowadays. Sure, only a 64bit program can use 4gb+ RAM, but what about the OS? Sitting on the desktop Windows 7 x64 takes up 1.5gb for me.

OP, the build looks good, but one thing. Drop the PSU to a 650w. And, if you want, upgrade the GPU to a 560ti (that's only if you plan on getting more into gaming though.) And if you really want to save money, drop the CPU to a 3570k (still a great CPU and will work fine for your needs) and this mobo: Newegg.ca - MSI Z77A-G43 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

but a 64bit OS only makes sense if you use 64 bit programs, because windows has to convert 32bit programs to run on 64bit OS it actually makes the programs run slower than they would on a 32bit windows ^.^
im detracting from the acctually question though, so since i have nothing more to say on this guys thread, i'll be quiet ;P

:TheFuu:

No, seriously :p While it does have to convert them to run on x64, it's not really going to effect overall system performance. Building a computer today and running x86 Windows on it makes as much sense as putting ice cream in the pantry. 64bit just makes sense at this point. Hardware, and now more then ever software are taking advantage of x64.

Edit: I could have phrased that better, but you get my point. x64 is better. End. Of. Story.

Actually, 64bit is better in all areas. You can use large amounts of RAM for more than just programs, the allocation from GPU RAM doesn't hog your system RAM in 64bit as it would in x86, you can use large amounts of RAM with RAMDisk making certain things that much faster, x86 games can be programmed to see more than 2GB of RAM, and x86 programs run natively on Windows. There is no conversion.

This. I only said conversion because I saw what he was getting at with WOW64.
