Hard drive disappearing from my computer

Hmm have you looked at SSD's? They don't have any moving parts and so last longer because they are basically a really really BIG usb drive. Plus you don't need to defragment SSD's either. The only reason defrag exists is because in normal drives it has an arm that reads data. And the longer it takes for the arm to move the slower the speed. I like SSD's and they are highly recommended around here. I am not sure if they are in your price range but I am sure you might find one for you and trust me you won't regret it.

RAID can be done on modern SSD's with Garbage Collection, but even that is iffy. You really need a special RAID controller that supports the handling, and passing of TRIM to the SSD, even then, that controller MUST be SSD aware, and the OS needs to know the array is actually an SSD array.

GOOD controller: $450
2TB worth of SSD's = overly expensive.
