Highlighting/Opening Desktop Icons

I have a client who when she clicks on a desktop icon eg: Word it highlights if she then double-clicks on the Excel Icon (ie: opens it), Word opens as well
She is using XP Pro

Is there a fault or is it easier just to set for Single-click to open the program ?

Check the mouse settings.
Start/Settings/ControlPanel/Mouse

Or maybe its folder options.
Start/Settings/ControlPanel/Folder Options
