Avoiding software licensing infringement?

So, thinking about it, after receiving a the proper code for whatever module or program, how can you guarantee that you're not infringing on the copyrights of past programmers when you have no prior knowledge of tech jargon and/or code?

Check the licensing terms of what they do and do not allow from where you downloaded the source.

Are you talking about modifying the source code? Or using it commercially? Or what exactly?
