Printer problems

Ok, it started when i upgraded my PC from windows 2k to XP pro, and when ive tried to print something it says the printer isnt connected, when it is, ive reinstalled drivers and software and it still doesnt work. When i first plug my printer in the USB it detects it and tries to install it, but then says it has a problem occured with the hardware. Its not the usb ports because, ive tested them with other devices.
My printer is also only a couple of months old and is a Lexmark x5150
