1. Make a recovery disk - Laptop or desktop computers needs general software backup. In the event of virus infection or crash-down, there is always a back up on hand which can be software saved in DVD optical disc or hard disc. Manufacturers recommend saving one just right after the first usage.

2. Update anti virus - You can purchase or download free anti virus online. Updating anti virus requires downloading virus definitions online which can last for days, weeks or months.

3. Keep computer exhaust port free of dust. Use compressed can air blower to remove dust inside fan and ports.

4. Avoid removing warranty tags and entrust computer repairs and data recovery to professionals

5. Defrag - Run defrag software to organize computer files every week or monthly depending on computer usage[

Number 5 doesn't actually need to be done in windows 7 or Vista due to it being done in the background. However in XP this is vital. Good tips though. :)

Well, we can skip number 4.

We make repairs all the time.

And yeah, for 5, in Win 7, you don't need to do it. And with SSD's, you don't want to.

Forgot to add that as well. Because some of the people on this forum ARE professionals or are retired professionals. Ksod is just one. ;) Who knows how many PC's he fixed between 07 and 12

He's not retired, Luke.

As I understand it, he hasn't replaced many systems, but he was big in Windows OS's. And he started with 3.1.
