I used a simple DVI to HDMI cable (not powered or active, doesn't even have ferrite chokes) to connect my video card (MSI GTX 465) to my TV/Monitor (Samsung T23A350) and it has sound coming through the monitor speakers.

I always thought DVI couldn't transmit sound. no point of this thread, I just wanted to share.

Certain devices are capable of outputting hdmi from a dvi out. It's product specific. This is from Wikipedia using your situation as proof of validity.

Any HDCP compliant video card will support sound out from the GPU it self as it is a seperate audio device. You just have to set that as the default for the audio stream your using. But yea, HDCP = requires audio support.

My ancient ATI 3850 is HDCP compliant and used a DVI-HDMI converter and gave me sound at the same time.
