Well, I've been hosting a Minecraft server on my desktop for ~ a year now. First it was on a Q9550 and 8GB RAM on Vista / 7, now it's on an i7 2600k with 16GB RAM, so it's always had quite a bit of power to spare. I've gotten to the stage where I'm turning my computer off every night and am looking to move the server to an older low powered computer of mine.
Hardware: 80GB Seagate HDD, Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3Ghz, 512MB DDR2 1066 (I think) RAM, and an ATI / AMD X300 video card. It will be running Ununtu / Slackware / other Linux-based OS from the command line to be as efficient with what little power / space I have as possible.
I'm wondering if anyone has hosted a MC server on 512MB? I typically see ~5 people on my server, maybe max of 10, with around 30 unique players. Mostly me and my friends play. My server is set up right now with five worlds: Survival, nether, the_end, Flat (creative), and Creative (creative). I have like 15 plugins installed.. I forgot which ones exactly. Essentials, MultiInv, MultiVerse, Lockette, PermissionsEX, Dynmap, Mobile Admin, among others.
Think it's possible? Five worlds on such a small amount of RAM might not be very wise. I'm going to begin testing today when I get home. Ubuntu is already installed on the hard drive, it's just a matter of setting up ssh for remote management (it will be headless and in a different room than my current "server") and any Java runtimes I need (I don't think Ubuntu 11.10 comes with them installed by default, does it? I've installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, it's probably in there).
I'm hoping I can get another 512MB stick from work from one of the discarded machines. I have a 2GB stick laying around I need to try.. However, the board says DDR2-800 whereas the stick is DDR2-667. It's still worth a try
Thanks for any replies!
