dvi to vga trouble

i have a ati 5450 it has 1 vga 1 dvi and 1 hdmi i want to run muli monitors but all i have is vga lcds i bought a dvi to vga adapter and what im doing is using a dvi cable to connect to my video card and the adapter to the monitor pluged everything in and the monitor on the dvi goes blank what i want to know is will this setup work or not or do i just have a defective part

OK. I think I got what you said.

The adapter goes on the computer end.

Video card -> DVI to VGA adapter -> VGA cord -> Monitor

I think you are doing it backwards.

MindOverMaster is correct, you're doing it backwards. Use the VGA cable for the monitor, connect that to the adapter, plug the adapter into the DVI connector on the card and it should work.
