I have this Toshiba A305 which I bought more than 2 years ago. Since I began using it I never encountered any software or hardware problem until recently my LCD backlight won't work. Have you tried reseating the video cable into the LCD screen? Laptop screens are not like LCD monitors in that the backlight is separate from the screen itself AFAIK. If reseating the cable does not fix it then you will probably have to replace the screen itself.
